About
MAKE Learn is an advocacy campaign led with Craft Scotland. Its ambition is to ensure that every young person is given the opportunity to learn through craft and to develop material skills. Through this work, MAKE Learn proposes the long-term value of teaching craft and making skills from early years through to further education and advocates for the inclusion of craft within Scotland’s education curriculum.
MAKE Learn is led by a Steering Group and in 2023 delivered a Scottish Parliament Briefing Event and a Scottish Parliament Exhibition, driven by the recommendations of our ‘Craft and Making Education in Scotland’ research and on the outcomes of our ‘Pilot Schools Project’ activity.

Craft and Making Education in Scotland
Drawing upon existing research, a survey of both teachers and makers and a set of key case studies, the ‘Craft and Making Education in Scotland’ report identifies key issues and makes recommendations to tackle inequality in craft education, change perceptions of craft, identify career paths, and facilitate new experiences and opportunities for all of Scotland’s young people.
The Pilot Schools Project was aimed at P5–7 children within local authority primary schools across the council regions of Glasgow and Argyll and Bute. The project aimed to measure the proposed impact of strengthening the craft sector in Scotland through craft activities that built creativity, skills development and learning, meeting CfE second level benchmarks in the Expressive Arts, Health and Wellbeing and Sciences and Technologies.
